Visualising 100,000 Asteroids

Alex Parker, a planetary astronomer, is the ultimate data artist. He takes massive datasets and creates fantastic works of art related to my favourite topic: space. In his latest piece Parker visualised more than 100,000 asteroids in our Solar System as observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

The following mesmerising animation highlights each of these asteroids' orbital motions, their size and their observed colour in the sky. Wow!
